Virgin Atlantic Upper Class Clubhouse Virgin Atlantic Airways, Crawley, GB

The spectacular 2,500 square metre Clubhouse at London Heathrow includes a spa, restaurant, and several bars – interiors that feel like a private members’ club. The architectural objective was that the Clubhouse should be seen as a single flowing ‘landscape’ rather than dividing the volume up into separate rooms. The space is kept as open as possible so as to maximise the sense of scale. The busier, social activities like the bars and dining areas animate the main space of the Clubhouse, with break-out areas such as the spa around the perimeter. Arranged across two sculpted floor levels with a series of ‘landmarks’ and ‘vistas’, the layout encourages passengers to stroll and explore their surroundings, echoing the patterns of movement on the ground and in the skies around the airport. Overhead, a unique sweeping ceiling recalls an expanse of sky, raked by gently drifting clouds. Its undulating geometry, echoed in the layout of the floor, weaves across the space and unites the room along its remarkable length.
